Story

The Gillis family originated in Scotland. The name Gillis is Gaelic in origin and means "servant of Jesus." It is pretty certain that the Gillis family name evolved from the name Gillies.

It was long thought the Gillis name orginated in Oban Scotland as the surname had always been assoicated with Oban. Recent research done by Ralph Gillis & Steve Gillis uncovered a different meaing for Oban.

"An t-Òban" in Gaelic, means little bay. It is now believed Oban in reference to the Gillis' was referring to "Obain" the little bay at the end of Loch Morar. When I visited Morar and started questioning the Gillis name I was introduced to Ewen MacDonald. Ewen was a sort of local historian or story teller. He had many tails to tell including how it was common knowledge the Gillis' of past had lived at the end of Loch Morar. The Picture for the sites banner is the actually the little bay on Loch Morar.

I created this website for DNA resarch and to share ancestory information for Donald B Gillis b. 1710 and his descendants. I hope the Gillis' from around the world will use this site to come together, share information, and create a complete profile for the Gillis descendants. Please explore and contact me with any questions or comments.
